smartctl reports "DELL PERC controllers are not supported"

Hi.

I'm sure this is a very basic question, but I'm not too experienced with hardware stuff on linux yet. Anyway, on one of your Dell 1950 servers I've got messages such as these in dmesg:

Code:
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
For debugging purposes I did this:
Code:
[root@server ~]# smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.36 [x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: DELL PERC 6/i Version: 1.11

DELL PERC controllers are not supported.
Does this mean that my RHEL 5.2 server doesn't have drivers for the PERC 6/i controller?

Regards,
kenneho

Look care fully at what you've posted above.

The dmesg error refers to /dev/hda but you've run smartctl against /dev/sda

And I suspect the message "DELL PERC controllers are not supported." is coming from smartctl, as in, smartctl and/or smartd doesn't support the controller.

As for PERC 6/i on RHEL 5.x and 6.x, it's apparently supported. Check here for more info (found this via Google, first page):

Cheers!
