Sendmail: Telnet Test Problems from External Networks

Hi Everyone,

I seem to having some strange issues with my new sendmail server and was hoping that somebody can offer some assistance with this issue.

I recently tried to setup an enviromental monitor that sends alerts via email using a dedicated email account I created on my sendmail server. For whatever reason, it does not seem to be able to send emails, and I have verified the account credentials multiple times.

So I attempted to run a telnet SMTP test to determine what the problem was. I was able to connect and send the emails using this test perfectly fine from my local subnet, however I ran into problems attempting this test from the outside world.

When I connect the SMTP PORT 25 from the outside world, I get what seems to be a malformed SMTP greeting.

Quote:
Escape character is '^]'.
220 *****0********************************************22*****20*0 0*********0*00
After I recieve this greeting, I cannot type any of the required test commands. (eg. ehlo, helo, mail from:, rcpt to. Not even the "quit" command will work, I have to terminate my shell.

If I connect from the local subnet, I get the standard (proper) greeting, and things go smoothly.

I am receiving emails from outside world to this mail server, so I'm stumped as to what this problem may be.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi -

The firewall is disallowing SMTP connections. For example, it might be a Cisco router with "mailguard" enabled. Or "Watchguard, or Sonicwall, or Raptor, or a dozen others...."

If you have the problem, and you are using an smtp secure daemon or proxy, the first troubleshooting step should be to turn it off.
'Hope that helps .. PSM
