Permissions

Hi,

Lets say there is user"ABC", now what could be minimum permission given to a file in home directory of "ABC" so that "ABC" can read that file. Also what could be minimum permission of directory.

what do you mean by minimum?

if you mean you want user ABC to be able to read the file, but not write or execute, and that no-one else should have any rights to the file i believe the octal is 400, same permissions for the directory. however because the directory you are talking about is a home directory im not 100% sure.

I suppose that the minimum USEFUL permission for a file is 400 (read only by the owner).

You could of course set it to 000 (no one can do anything--except root, whose permissions are not changeable)

"execute" privileges on a directory are required to enter it or make changes inside

ah that makes sense, something new for me to learn. thanks.
i havent worked that much with directories that you shouldnt be able to write to, my permissions issues are normally making sure only certain users can write to them.
