Password protect web folders dilemma

Hey alles!

I'm having problems to password protect folders in www-directory. Have searched and tried out many different ways to get it working without luck. htaccess is workin great on my old server that is to be replaced if some kind of passwd protection could be managed.

Some specs: Apache 2.2.3 Debian 4.

What I'm in need of is step by step directions,, if some kind soul could walk me through this..

Don't know,, have read that some changes in apache 2.2.3 is the reason and I have not figured out how to configure it. About the old server: I'ts a earlier version of apache.

Haven't found any documentation that that shows how to set it up step by step,, just only fragments so here I am
