newbie fileserver--ssh question (ip vs DNS)

Hello, I am a new member and I am a real newbie at everything networking and linux.

I wasn't sure whether to post in this forum or the newb forum but I decided to go with this one.

So i went ahead and downloaded ubuntu server and put it on my machine with the LAMP configuration. I created a username called eazhar and hostname ubuntuServ (i know, very original). I installed openssh-server and then i let it sit there. using my other machine, (FC 6) i went ahead and tried to connect to it using

Quote:
ssh eazhar@ubuntuServ

that didnt seem to work.

So i went back and did an ifconfig on the server machine and found out i was 192.168.1.108.

this time i typed

Quote:
ssh eazhar@192.168.1.108
and this time it worked and I connected.

Could someone explain why the hostname doesn't accomplish the same goal?

Also, am I forced to remember what ip I am on or is there a DNS allready defined in my server (if so how can i figure that out)? If not how can i set it up?

Thanks in advance!

Name resolution can be resolved through the /etc/hosts file on the client or by querying a DNS server on the network.

By default your client will look in the local hosts file.
If this fails ... and the client is configured with the address' of any DNS servers then it will attempt to query that server.

DNS setup can be static or dynamic.
If your network hosts obtain an IP address through a DHCP server ... then you require Dynamic DNS.
If you use static IP address's then you can just add the host/IP to the DNS server's table.
