mod_rewrite usage

Hello,
I have a webmail service with multiple domains and i want that when a browser calls http://mail.example.com the server has to redirect to https://mail.example.com/webmail . I heard that it can be done through mod_rewrite ( I use apache as web server).
How can this be done?
