many instances of smbd taking up much cpu time

Hi there --

We have samba running on an HP-UX 11.00 system, and I noticed there are over forty (40) instances of smbd, but only one instance of nmbd. The large amount of smbd pid's are taking up about half of the cpu time on the system. This is causing a noticeably slower response time with other applications.

Has anyone seen this, and have ideas as to why this is occurring. Also, aside from stopping and restarting Samba, can I safely kill the extra smbd processes? Thanks.

Haven't done Samba on HP-UX for a while. Where I last did it I never saw this. However, I imagine smbd like nfsd is configurable as to how many you need to run. With nfsd you determine how many daemons to start by how many clients you expect to have using the share. If its only a couple then 4 would be plenty. If you have thousands then you may need a lot more.

FYI: Not a lot of HP-UX traffic on this forum. You might try HP's official support forums (itrc.hp.com) or the Dutchworks mailing list.
