Logging onto a Red Hat 9 Server with Windows XP Pro?

Hi Guys,

I don't know if this is really possible but is it possible to log on to a Red Hat Server with Microsoft Windows XP Pro, as I have recently created a Red Hat Server with version 9 and would like to log onto that server with a Windows OS.

Any help on this would be much appreciated,

Thanks guys,

Peter.

Do you want to log on using the command line? In that case, go download PuTTY for the windows box. SSH access is probably enabled to default in Red Hat, although I'm not certain about that.

If you want graphical access, it's a whole 'nother story, though.

Question

I am looking to turn on my Windows Machine, and Windows will the then aske me for a username and password to which i can authenticate these with the Red Hat Server. (Windows Client logging onto Domain with Domain Controller OS Red Hat 9 Server).

I could ask is it possible to set the server as a domain controller with the same utils such as Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 I suppose.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

You need to configure Samba - there's loads of documentation and FAQs and a really good O'Reilly book on how to do this and hook it up to Windows.

A recommendation I would make for you is to use a more up-to-date Linux distribution than RedHat 9 - it's very old. Take a look at the Fedora project, or CentOS for something current, but still sticking with the RedHat way of doing things.

They can be downloaded from the link on the right labelled "Download Linux", or clicking here.
