Linux file server - WIN / LINUX clients, what to do

Hi

I just had my linux fileserver set up, and I am wondering what to do. I have two Windows laptops and a Debian Linux one at my house, and they all need to have access to the file server. My initial thought is to go with SAMBA. Is this a good idea, or simply this is the only possibility? For the windows laptops, it works smoothly, they can MAP the networking drive, etc. However, on the Linux laptop, the video is choppy over the SAMBA server. Is there a speed issue when using a linux server and a linux client and communicating over SAMBA? Is there any other more preferred method?

Thanks

Ben

For your linux systems set up NFS ( Network File System ). It is much easier than samba, both to set up and administer. The best part is you can mount the NFS shares just like they are local drives. I mount NFS shares on my laptop from my desktop, and then use xmms to play ogg and mp3 files on my laptop.

It will work with windbloze also, but, just like most good stuff on windoze you $$$$. I have not looked for a freeware program for windbloze for a NFS client or server, they may exist.

Like camorri pointed out, although NFS is generally a better solution, it can be very frustrating to setup it on Windows (note that it is possible).
