How to set up a basic VPN server

Hi,

A while back I had a working VPN server set up. I used the guide here https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/IPSEC...ntu_14.04.html
to set up a VPN server on an Ubuntu machine. I was able to flip the vpn-switch on my iphone and browse my local network from wherever I happened to be.

Now it is not working anymore, I suspect this has to do with both iOS and the server software being updated and the setup is obsolete somehow. Does anyone know of a similar guide that works for current software versions?

I have a basic understanding of servers and networking, but I'm no guru, so step-by-step instructions would be preferable. I don't mind using a dedicated VM for the server, so OS is not important. My only requirement is that I can connect with my iPhone (iOS 14).

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

How to set up a basic VPN server

That looks quite complicated.

I'd look at OpenVPN. There is plenty of documentation for it on the internet, and there is an iPhone app available. It will most likely be more secure and robust than your previous setup.

I've setup wireguard. It is really fast in connecting and working very reliable here.
There are ios clients too. See this: link for example.

Thank you both for your suggestions!
I know I wrote that my requirement is to be able to connect with my phone. I guess I should have said that I would prefer to use the native VPN functionality and not use a third party app...

I ended up following the tutorial here: https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...n-ubuntu-20-04

VPN server is now working perfectly!
