Question FTP Server simple and secure

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to Linux and have a redhat 9 server. I use Webmin for general server management.

I would some advice and help on setting up a ftp server.
basically i want three main folders on my ftp server
pub - public with anonymous access
upload - username/password required for this folder
download - username/password required for this folder

user should be able to upload to the upload folder and create subfolders etc.

Which is the most simplest ftp server with decent security to setup something like this? I am not sure if a user needs to be created in RH for authentication, if so what rights should this user have? Or can i create a virtual user on the ftp server for authentication.

I've setup VSFTPD with RH and seems that when i'm connected using the default FTP user I can change directory and browse server folders like etc, var, tmp, home, usr etc. How do i block this? I only want the user to access the home directory and subfolders not upper folder in the hierarchy. I there a better FTP server i can use and setup virtual users rather than standard linux user.

Your help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

There is no ftpd you can configure with 2 clicks. Take a look at the documentation and edit the config file according to your needs...

Well, I think that vsftpd would be a good choice. It is secure, and if you read the advises in the README file and look at the configuration options in vsftpd.8.gz it is not very difficult to configure because there is just one config file and the variable names often say what the variables are for.

You can download it at vsftpd.beasts.org
