Are there any freely-available subdomain certificates that last at least a year?
thanks

Both self signed certificates and wild card certificates pose their own problems and as far as I'm aware there's nothing in between.

StartSSL offers free SSL certificates, period. You can get 1 year ones for free, without verification, however, you can also get level 2 SSL certs, which last 2 years, if you go through verification. To go through verification, you can either pay $60 or get verified by several WOT notaries, which is free, but is a bit of a hassle.

If you look around for a reseller you can pick up a GoDaddy cert for around half the price. For example I've got them on my reseller account for about $50 a year for a single domain cert, and $200 for unlimited subdomains. www.MyDomainCP.com

Oh, and those prices are the minimum that GoDaddy let their resellers price them at.

Yes, I've used their free S/MIME certs, but I don't think their webserver SSL certs support subdomains, though.

Subdomains and even wildcards. All free, but I think you do need to be level 2 verified, which can be done fairly easily by either paying $60US, which entitles you to a 1 year of level 2 verification status, during which time you can generate as many certs as you want, or you can get yourself verified for free by looking for notaries in your area and meeting with them face to face.

If you pay, you can get level 2 verified within 24 business hours. If you go with the free route (notaries), you need to find them, figure out place/time to meet that works for both of you, etc, etc. I prefer just paying, but to each her/his own.

I didn't know that was an option. thanks. I used to be part of Thawte's WoT, but then they discontinued it.

I love Linux or any free software; therefore, I don't like to pay even if I were a billionaire.

This wasn't obvious to me on the StartSSL website, but once you become a part of their WoT, does that mean you have unlimited ability to make free Level 2 certs?

thanks
