"/dev/xvd" file is not getting created on RHEL7 client running on Citrix Xen 6.5

Hi,

I am working on below use case :

1. take the RHEL 7.0 "initrmfs" image and modify it to insert a script which will get called at boot stage 1.

2. create an bootable iso image which will contain modified initramfs image and RHEL7.0 kernel(vmlinz).

3. create a VM on citrix xen 6.5 server.

4. mount the created bootable image and boot the VM in this environment.

when I boot the VM, boot loader identifies & loads the kernel successfully, all necessary drivers including xen_nefront & xen_blkfront gets loaded successfully.

problem is :

Although disk driver "xen_blkfront" driver gets loaded successfully, "/dev/xvd*" file does not get created, which leads to disk identification failure at later stage.

I am not able to figure out why this file is not getting created if the necessary disk driver module(xen_blkfront driver) is loaded successfully and also all the required scsi controller(ata_piix in this case) are loaded successfully.

Please suggest if you have some insights on the similar problem.

Thanks,
indus

Well... if you don't hack the kernel... I seem to remember Xen mounts a stock RHEL 7 instance with no issues. It boots up just fine and mounts "local" and SAN storage. So I'm thinking it's that kernel hack you mentioned earlier.
First make sure your not blocking the other modules with it. You don't say what it does so I can't help you there.
Then, if that doesn't work, try stripping functionality out until you can boot the instance because if the instance doesn't boot, you don't have any functionality.
