Debian Squeeze - remote access vs. local access permissions ??

Hello,

I have a local server running a custom web app that I wrote. I need to be able to work on the software when I am not at the server's physical location, my daytime job.

I set up OpenSSH, ProFTP, and also freeNX, on this server. All three of these work great, when I'm on the LAN at work.

I've opened the necessary ports through the router, but still cannot get into the server remotely. For about 2 weeks, I've suspected that there was some issue/s related to the router (Cisco RV220W) but now I'm fairly sure it is NOT. Today, I set up a Filezilla Server on a Windows XP box, and I can access via Filezilla Client without a problem.

So, my questions is: Are there separate permissions or authentication settings for remote access versus local access ??

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Henry,

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I compared the output from iptables -L with a server that did work, and they are the same.

What I did find (my bad) was the gateway IP was not correct in /etc/network/interfaces.

This has allowed me to SSH in a couple of times, but now that has stopped working. Oddly enough, when you do an ifconfig command, the gateway IP is *not* listed even though it is in the interfaces file !! This is why it took me so long to find the error. Error occurred because I was carrying the system back and forth to home, where my network has different settings.

Still never been able to FTP or HTTP into the server though, so I'm still suspecting something weird with the router. I will remotely reset the router, sometime tonight, after the business closes.

Again, thanks.

Bill
