Cannot Rewrite Password File Error Message

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4.0 on HP Proliant DL380 G4

When adding a group or user, I'm getting this error message;

groupadd test -g 65535 It says "groupadd: cannot rewrite group file"

useradd -u 65535 test "useradd: cannot rewrite password file"

One thing I must say. I loaded this box on Saturday and on first reboot where it tries to register with RHN, Well, I found out RHN was down until about 2PM that day so I left for the day, came back this morning and the box was sitting at a login like it had rebooted over the weekend - maybe we lost power. I was able to login and run up2date --register. I ran all the updates, then rebooted and ran up2date -uf. This worked as well. But when I try to add users or groups I get the above messages.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Randall

Hello and welcome to LQ.

Is there a stale lockfile? Extended attributes?
