Backup from linux to windows

Hi. I have a debian Lenny server (with samba) with loads of .conf files. I also have a Windows 2003 server with a HP ultrium backup unit. My idea is to mount a windows shared directory one per day and copy there my .conf files. I have created a shared directory named "linux" in my windows server and a "linux" user (in windows) that is member of the administrator's group. Now, How can I mount the unit and copy the files?

You'd have to install and configure samba on your Linux machine then do an smb share of the filesystems you want to backup and mount those shares on your Windows system like you would any other Windows share.

Basic info here:

Howto info here:

I am trying to mount a windows shared directory on a debian lenny. I think that you are explaining to me how to accomplish the opposite operation. Is this possible?

Yes - it is actually more commonly done.

The second link (the howto) includes a section on mounting Windows shares to Linux. This still requires configuring samba on the Linux machine.

However, since the Ultrium drive is on your Windows machine it appeared you wanted to backup Linux files to it which is why I responded as I did.

By doing the share from Linux to Windows you eliminate the copy step - you just backup from the share itself.

If you want to store the files on your Windows box so they are always there and are just backing up from Windows to have them in case the Windows machine goes down you might want to consider rsync instead. The rsync command allows you to copy specified files to one server from another. Getting rsync on Linux is fairly trivial (its usually included in the basic distributions). You can add rsync to Windows by first installing Cygwin which is Linux installation that will run under Windows without replacing Windows.

The link here has a good howto on this:

MensaWater, you're completely right. Just after I have reposted, I created a shared directory in linux and added it to my backup schedule in windows. Now the only thing that I have to do is copy the desire .conf files to the shared directory every day (with cron).
You let me see that this idea it's much more simplier than creating a shared dir on windows. Thanks a lot!
