zip password protection/encryption


is there anyway to either password protect or encrypt my zip files when i run the command from the command line.

PW protect yes. This is typically a question that could be resolved by looking in the man page for zip.
BTW, I prefer using Rar. It's cross-platform and has more features.

should have made i clearer it know about the -e command put the zip is run by cron is there anyway of specifying the password as the command is called because when i use it it halts and waits for user input - also is there a similar feature in tar as I can't find anything in the man page.

A few lines above in the man page it hints the variable ZIPOPT can be used to change any options except -i and -x. See if that works for you. Exporting a password means it remains in memory for at least the duration of the process and can be read. Bzip2, gzip and tar don't deal with passwords and it depends on how it's processed, the amount of files, size of the archive, level of protection needed and cross-platform compatibility what you should choose.
