Trying to understand firewalling, why does iptables need to be restarted

As the title says I use Firestarter to start a firewall, ie I su to root after dialling up and issue firestarter -s

If I get disconnected I must stop the firewall and then restart it once I am reconnected or I will get time-out messages from the browser.

I am looking for a newbie-understandable explanation of this situation, or maybe a tutorial of how to write my own firewall rules.

TIA

mark

I am not familiar with firestarter but I am guessing that your rules are explicitly naming your public ip. this is probably on the INPUT table. What is happening is that since (again assumption) your ip is dynamically assigned your rules will not work when your ip changes. Unless you are using NAT i dont know why you would really need your public ip included in your rules. I don't know any way around this as long as destination ip is included in your chain.

You could post iptables -L if you wanted to confirm this as the problem.
