Could be misbehaving network hardware flipping bits.
Yikes! If that's the case, I hope it's not my hardware (I'm like poor and stuff). That said, it seems to have stopped doing it. I was hoping to confirm whether it was happening to anyone else so that I could at least narrow it down a bit (and be confident that I wasn't being individually targeted by a man-in-the-middle attack). At this point there isn't much for me to do but keep on eye on things. Thanks for the feedback!
I'm using Firefox with Windows XP. I started getting the same error message today just after reinstalling McAfee SiteAdvisor in IE. This installation automatically installs SiteAdvisor in Firefox, also. Though I don't know if there is any connection between the SiteAdvisor installation and the error message.

Did anything come of this?
Welcome to LQ!
I did some sanity checking on my network hardware and everything looked fine. I've also been closely monitoring my network for any other similar quirks, and have seen nothing of the sort. As such, the only thing I can say with reasonable certainty is that it is unlikely that the problem was caused by faulty network hardware on my end (thankfully). My suspicion is that it's either an issue on Mozilla's network (be it one of their servers or maybe a router), or a bug in the Firefox code. I sort of discarded the possibility of being under MITM attack, as I would have expected to see it continue in one form or another in that case. Of course, you never know.
Thanks for the reply, win32sux. After a few hours the error message went away, so it appears that I don't have to worry with it. If it helps, my computer isn't on any network except the Internet.
As an aside, I am slowly moving from Windows to Ubuntu, currently using the Wubi installation. This looks like it would be a helpful site.
