Question JohnTheRipper: how to specify a pattern

Hello,
in my ultimate stubbornness, I refuse to reset root's password of my machine. Thus i have been trying to crack it.

I came across the "John the Ripper" tool.
Question:

how do i specify mode/rule(?) to attempt to crack the password based on a pattern?

I remember part of the password:
<special sym> or not|WORLD|<special symbol>|<maybe another character>|<a few digits>

for example:
~WORLD?20 or WORLD?12 or !WORLD1

in other words, "world" is there, but the rest of the characters are gone from my fingers' memory

First, the official documentation. Then there are some examples in the Openwall Community Wiki.

Old school sometimes is the best solution, just write it down. Or make some documentation.

oh, wow, that is quite a guide. Thank you for sharing.
Obviously, the morning after I reset the pass, I recalled the old one. I guess time to add my root password to my 20 yo notepad. %)

That 20 yo notepad, cannot be hacked. But can be stolen, or misplaced. There's always a trade-in haha.
