Question specify root block device for boot, but specify where?

on a fresh vanilla gentoo, during boot, i get:

Code:
>> Activating mdev
>> Determining root device...
!! could not find the root block device in .
Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same, type "shell" for a shell, or "q" to skip...
root block device() ::
i can get it to continue booting by entering "/dev/sda12" here, which is of course the correct drive... but i'd like to know where is it that this is supposed to be configured already, so that i may go enter the correct details there, so i dont have to do that every time i boot.

it all looks correct in fstab, and grub, not sure where else to look. could it be a mdev issue? no idea how to sort that if it is... ok, now i'm just rambling.

where do i set the root block device to stop it asking me this?

1. cat /etc/fstab
2. cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
3. df -h

1. http://paste.pocoo.org/show/453489
2. umm... that's a little more convoluted with my complex multi-grub configuration across my system, but this should suffice since it's the last grub that actually launches gentoo (ignore the rest of the entries, they were just copy&pasted in haste): http://paste.pocoo.org/show/453487
3. http://paste.pocoo.org/show/453484

thnx.
