I'm between a rock and a hard place

OS: fedoras core 6
Firewall: Firestarter
Browser: Epiphany
Instant massager: pidgin (stoped working)
I'm having a hard time saving this computer. Recently when I get up in the morning, I get this message "yahoo has signed you out because you are signed in from another computer. so I ran a port scan on myself and it says port 22 ssh is open and listening (never was before) If I do a netstat pidgin is waiting for connection when it's not open nor has it been for weeks.
Something else is weird, I can't run pirut to add and remove programs anymore, so I'm stuck. (it says no network connection)
I would just wipe this computer and load a newer version but ever since I install fedora my CD burner won't write I think that is a permisions problem or a driver issue. I logged in as root and it still wouldn't work.
thank you for any help!

With out internet connectivity (which it sounds like you dont have) unless you have the CD as a repo then pruit wont work. try adding the CD as a repo.

if you can get to your system from the local lan but internet services are not working (like pruit and pigeon) it sounds to me like a bad subnetmask or default gateway. Can you browse the internet from firefox? If not then post your ifconfig?

that is BECAUSE there have BEEN NO updates to fedora 6 in a LONG time and the rpm's have been moved into the fedora archives -- a long a time ago .

your ifconfig is missing the IP address, normally a good idea but not so helpful when trying to diagnose a network problem...

do a
locate ifcfg-eth0
cat /PATH.../ifcfg-eth0
and post it here...
