Question emergency mode asks for the root password

Hello,
when booted into single/emergency mode (fedora 30) i'm asked to enter the root password for maintenance mode or ctrl-D to continue.

ctrl-D loads into init5...
2 questions:
a. why am i asked to enter root pass in the rescue/single user mode?
b. how to bypass the authentication?

// my issue - i forgot the root pass //facepalm

Good question, but it's done so by design.

Use DuckDuckGo and find https://fedoramagazine.org/reset-root-password-fedora/.

Just imagine, if you could access any computer without password in single user mode...

I see your point, at the same time, if resonably determined person gets access to usb and Bios...

I assume you're joking. :^)

Linux's single user is, essentially, a full working operating system compared to most UNIX OSes. When you booted those into single user mode all you normally had available was "/". You had to issue "./bcheckrc" to mount all the filesystems. There are times when I wish Linux ran a bit more minimally when in single user mode. There's not much worse than booting to single user mode to fix something simple only to find that it's time for a multi-terabyte filesystem to be fscked.
