Can I use DenyHosts with UFW?

Every tutorial I've read mentions something about iptables and I am unfamiliar with iptables (and linux security in general). I only intermittently port forward SSH when I'm away doing work and need to access my home server but I've noticed there is quite a few different IP addresses attempting to log in as root and I figured I should deal with this.

Well the first thing is to ensure that you have set up key-based authentication and have disabled password authentication. The second thing would be to ensure that remote root login is also disabled.

Beyond that, there is not much that needs to be done. However, if you wish to quiet the logs a bit you can install sshguard or similar. That will hook into iptables.
