The right answer is: if you want to start from an init script, it depends on your distribution

redhat, fedora: /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start
slackware: /etc/rc.d/rc.sshd start
and so on

A general answer could be: see where is sshd (#whereis sshd) and start it manually.

You do

find /etc -iname sshd

now you look to see which one seems an init script and you type the path you found and the start as it is described above
