Question Yum & software updater stopped working and DVD rom gone after last update

Hello,

trying to sort out my current Fedora install I have running but I am abit clueless about where to begin.
Worked my way through a install and even managed to get VMware to work. Did a update software though in the software update option that comes with fedora 6. And sit here asking why change a winnig team?

DVD RW drive disappeared (won't mount) and now YUM don't work. Can people point me to a few syntax that would help me in the right direction in means of debug output and help me out get this thing working again.

Cheers

I had a problem when I updated my Fedora 6 (using yum -y update)

It seems that if you install a newer kernel some of your ("old") hardware isn't supported. I had a problem with my video display (or the lack there of) when I installed the newest kernel.

I solved it by booting into the "older" kernel and my video came back on.

So all you have to do is boot to your older kernel.

Weird, it's normal indeed that display should be affected by a kernel update; after, video drivers match a specific kernel and by installing a new one, your video driver is simply being hosed with the old kernel. But for the DVDRW to disappear and yum to stop working? Maybe you can find some pointers by going over the log files in /var/log.

Btw, which repositories did you use to update?

OKi some clarification.

Yum not working I figured was simply the service beeing down, nothing worse it shows. Get the listings now when I do a yum command. Guess I am at only the dvd rw drive gone. I used the software updater from fedora menu's when I updated. All default, beeing a linux noob i don't even understad what repositories are so I couldn't answer you But it's a default Fedora 6 installation if that helps you understanding.

I tried to boot old kernel but no luck. Think I have done 2 updates though before I noticed dvd drive gone (not used so much).
