Linux booted just fine.
You're having troubles starting your graphical environment.
Possibly incompatible graphics hardware.
1. You should be able to log in via text mode like this:

a) If you've still got a graphical login screen, you might be able to select "text mode"
... or ...
b) You might be able to <Ctl-Alt-F1> to a text-mode login screen
... or ...
c) Failing all else, you might be able to boot in "safe mode" from the Linux install CD

2. Once you've booted in, you might find useful error info in any/all of these logs:

a) /var/log/messages
... and/or ...
b) /var/log/X11/*
... and/or ...
c) /var/log/gdm/*
d) $HOME/.xsession-errors
<= You included some good error messages ... but please keep looking

3. These are some graphical login files/directories that might have become corrupted, and might be worth removing:
