Xwindows and monitor.

For my computers class, im doing a linux box and security auditing of my machine for my project. Now, i got from my bro all the parts, except the HD. The HD i got from school's strut lab. (Old & used comp parts dontated for us to make systems with for classes like computers and then learn linux or whatever. So i brought home the HD and setup and installed Redhat 9. All installed 100% perfect.

My TLC monitor is different. from the one i have @ school. I use at school a gateway 1024ish i think...

How do i change the settings for X windows in the console. I know linux somewhat, the terminal in linux i have very little experience with.

heres the innards for ref.:
900mhz celeron
256mb PC133
6gb 5.25inch Quantum HD
Had my 40x12x48x CD-RW in it to install at home and then now have a Hitachi CD-R thingy drive. in it
integrated video. its an 810E chipset, and an asus board. 16mb vid.
floppy from an intel LANDesk workstation

Its an hp pavillion 7920, all but the HD and cd drive and floppy are original in the case (ram was added a while back) All works well.. i just need to figure out the easy way to change the monitor for x-windows. I have no video problems in terminal.

When i do

root@localhost#]: startx

it loads, but its all distorted and ghosting, and like its multiplyed all over the screen.
Thanks for your help

also how do i change the thing showing local host in terminal when logged in?

do i just change localhost.localdomain to like Exciter... or whatever name?

Thanks for your answers.

hi chriscoelphoto, welcome to lq. first make sure you know or have written down somewhere your monitors hor, and, vert, refresh rates, you'll need that info. sounds like you've got a handle on the video card and it's memory, w/ all of that info, and this

you should be on your way.

i couldn't possibly take any credit for posting a link to someone elses work, but, your welcome just the same. i actually posted a thank you to trickykid myself in the general forum when i found and successfully used that link myself. it's great to have such knowledgeable resources here. i just hope that this info helps the original poster.
