XFree86 access with Non-Root Problems

Hi

I have a SLES v9 server and have installed X Server

There is no other gui/desktop installed.
As long as I'm logged into the server as "root", I can start X windows (startx) just fine.

But if I log in as a normal user I get the following errors:
-bash: /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: Permission denied
-bash: exec: /user/X11R6/bin/startx: cannot execute: Permission denied

If I put my user into the "root" group, it works. But that can't be the answer. I've also tried changing permissions, but that just gets me so far before I run into more problems.

How do I configure X Windows to allow any normal user to start it (startx)?

thanks

Do you always attempt to startx having done so as root first?

It may be that you are experiencing 'locking'. Try 'xauth -b quit'
to release any locks.

Also check that your .Xauthority file gives read and write permissions to each user and not only root. Search for the file but it should be in the root home directory.

This post gives a lot more detail and will hopefully help;

thanks, but no help.

It seems to be a permission issue. "root" is the owner & group for everything under "/usr" (which includes X11R6).

So my normal user has no access (and gets permission denied). Isn't there some kind of configuration for X windows that will "allow" or "deny" usage of X windows!

please note: if I add my normal user to the "root" group, I can "startx" just fine.

thanks
