Only if you want a graphical interface. The system doesn't actually require it to function, and in many cases (like servers) it is an unnecessary complication.

If you want to use some licensing software I encountered earlier today, then yes because the damn thing only provides a binary blob that uses a GUI to do the administration. Otherwise no, not at all. I never install X on servers because I can do everything I need to at the command line over an ssh connection. (Well, until today...)
