x dont start on startup

running gentoo1.4, changed the inittab file accordingly, but still i get the command prompt !
i have windowmaker, gnome and kde installed.
anything i should configure with kde to gets its login screen to come up?

also, since i have always used the internet to find out everything i ever needed about nix machines, i am stuck at the moment cos my stupid BB modem aint supported, where are all the docs located in a standard layout? i already know the kernel compile 1's but they no good.
its hard to use the man or info pages when u dont know what ur looking for

the inittab file should be at whatever level gentoo has for a gui login.
then, instead of startx, run either gdm/kdm (gnome/kde).
i think itll pick it up from then on.

if some hardware device isnt supported, i dont know how you will find any docs pertaining to it on the machine.

Gentoo uses an init script to launch xdm/kdm/gdm.
Code:
rc-update add xdm default
set your preferred DM in /etc/profile, eg:
Code:
export DISPLAYMANAGER=GDM
