Your .xinitrc file can do much more than that, though. Here's mine:

As you can see, it loads up GKrellM, ical (a diary type thing), xmms, opens a console and plays 'starting up' type sounds, as well as changing my background image (BTW, those weren't in any particular order
). You'd need to put an & after the programs you want to run upon startup, and then lastly you'd have your window manager... I usually run SF, but I sometimes chop and change, so I have commented out the other options.
