Thanks. Can I just transfer the files to this hardrive, and save them here on Mandriva? Will it recognize them?

Use OpenOffice and I believe for word *.doc documents the most appropriate software in linux would be Abiword

OpenOffice Write and Abiword both can read/write to MS Word documents. Linux can read/write to NTFS, Fat32 & Fat formats. If the backup drive is formatted with NTFS, you may need to do some extra steps to be able to write to NTFS if Mandriva doesn't automatically have it setup to write. You can use Mandriva's filemanager to view the backup drive.
