Will Linux 5.1 detect an external 56kb modem using a USB connection?

This might sound stupid but can this be done and how?

Red Hat 5.1 dates from about 1998. It's extrmely out of date, unsupported, and no one in their right mind should do a new install of it. Older Linux have comparitively poor hardware support, so the answer to your question is most likely no.

Have your friend go to www.linuxiso.org or iso.linuxquestions.org and download something more recent.
