a debian system doesn't require too much
but really it depends on what kind of X you want to run (that is if you want any X)

so I'd go on a debian with fluxbox on it, that should work fine

since you're new to linux, with X I mean a desktop= window manager + file organiser

Use the search function to find similar threads to yours since this gets asked quite a lot. I would recommend Debian, Slackware or VectorLinux.

Vector Linux could be perfect for what you need(don't use the SOHO edition though as this uses KDE desktop that is quite hard on your memory. Also Damn Small Linux and Feather Linux are good too for old hardware.
