why doesn't HDMI only show picture and not sound?

Hi

As my first question and a complete noob, please forgive me if this has been covered a million times, but

My asus F9e laptop, shows picture ok on my plasma tv, but the sound doesn't - I'm running ubuntu 10.10

can anyone help me please?

check mixer.

post shell output of

lspci -v

Usually you have to set sound device to be the hdmi or whatever drives it. Sound device may be the built in audio and you need to change that. (maybe)

run alsamixer from command line and unmute the spdif channels.

You could also try unmuting external amplifier in alsamixer.
