Why Do I Need Floppy To Boot Up

I recently installed Redhat 7.2 on my laptop to run alongside Windows 2000. I created a boot disk during the installation but once it completed the only way that I was able to boot up my linux installation was by using the boot disk (i.e. by avoiding my boot manager and just going straight into Linux). If I try to boot from my boot manager it gets as far as the "Welcome To Redhat Linux . Press I For Interactive Setup/Startup (can't remember which)" and then nothing happpens. It doesn't let me enter the interactive thing nor does it start any of the services. I get around this using the boot disk but it's a hassle finding it everytime that I want to get into Linux. Can anyone help me rectify this?

you don't need to use the boot floppy - but you do need to use a boot manager. win2000 has it's own boot manager, which is capable of booting linux - if you search around this site a bit, you'll find quite a few threads on how to configure it.

for most windows versions, i'd recommend using lilo, but win 2000 works better with it's own boot manager - it gets testy if it doesn't have the MBR to itself.

booting with grub

I use grub in the mbr to boot windows XP (boots similar to 2000) and RH 7.2 and it works like a charm!
Much easier to just install grub and chainload windows than to reconfigure the windows 2000 bootloader.
