Can boot from floppy, would like to boot from Hard Drive
I've installed xosl to act as a boot manager and in the process my new redhat linux 8 installation will now only boot off of the floppy. Presumably I've wiped Grub from the MBR.
I've tried searching for a solution and come up with installing LILO to the root of the boot partition (/dev/hda5) but I can't find out how to do it.
Any suggestions on where to go from here would be appreciated!
Thanks
Mike

If you don't want to wipe your xosl manager, you should edit the /etc/lilo.conf, and add / edit this line to:
boot=/dev/hda5
Remember to run lilo afterwards:
/sbin/lilo
Otherwise, if you want lilo to be the main boot manager, you edit the same line, but to:
boot=/dev/hda
And again remember to run lilo, if you forget, it can't boot

Thanks for the reply and I understand what your suggesting. However I don't have a /etc/lilo.conf file - presumably because it installed Grub as the boot manager. Can I just create a lilo.conf or do I need to install something as well? If I just create the file then what else needs to be in it?
First day running linux and I'm keen to learn!
Thanks
Mike

You need to install lilo to use it, but isn't grub good enough for you? Don't know anything about grub, maybe check some how-tos on linuxnewbie.org or something.
What distro are you using?

I'm using the latest Redhat release, 8.0. It defaults to Grub during the standard install. I guess it would be ok to stick with Grub if I could work out how to set it up to work from the linux root partition so I could use xosl to chain to grub. I need xosl as the machine's primary use is for windows 2000 until I get up to speed with Linux.
All the posts I could find started from the assumption that you had LILO installed. I was looking for information on how to install LILO.
Remember I'm a complete newbie and know nothing. I just did my first install this afternoon. I'm trying to get a machine with a clean install so I can use it to learn Linux. I'm 99% there, if I could just get it to boot from the hard drive and I think I could get that working if I could find out how to install LILO. Is there an easy way to add LILO to an existing install?
