Well i was a windows User, rather am still somewhat. Due to problem withs windows that everybody know, i tried to shift on Linux, and i faced all the proble that everybody faces. And due to that i somewhat came back to windows, where somewhat means i still have linux installed, and some times play with it.

Now i wanna learn something fro you people's experience. Tell me which linux is best in terms of:



=> Easyness

=> NTFS Mounting [Auto mount or manual?, by the way i know how to add
them to get mounted on every boot....]

=> Softwares [How easily i can find softwares for that distro, How many softwares are available, and how easy it is to install those software, though i know that most of the software could be run on almost every linux via there tar code compilation.]


=> I am doing some development in PHP+MYSQL+APACHE, so is there any linux with all these as builtins?

=> Easy to find. [I can download it from there site, or its a well spread Linux and can be found in any market.]

=>Not Resource hungry.

=>A lot of help material available on web.

Then i wanna let you know another thing:

I use Fedora 5 KDE version. It was easy, and light i.e. not resource hungry. but there was some problem with softwares like the actuall firefox is released upto 2.0, and 3.0alpha, whereas in rps i could find only 1.5.0.7, and then also i had problem mounting NTFS, though atlast i mounted. and Still i have problem of video codecs, though i have installed all codec available. And Some players like VLC and Real when opened just crash in 3 seconds with no error message. I even tried re-installing them....


I tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu Dapper Drake version. Both were easy. Kubuntu was a little havier. But both had problem with my hardware detection. Else they were quite good.

I tried MAPIS, easy, light, NTFS autoDetect,but not many softwares, and also some hardware problems.

SUSE 10.0, a bit heavy, Full hardware compatibility Easy to use but not much softwares found..... and also not much help.

Similiary i tried some other Linuxes.......

also i read the names of Lindows and Linux XP, anybody tried them as of yet????

Slackware was my first distro, and I don't find it that difficult to learn. I have had much help from linuxquestions.org. I am yet to find an application I haven't been able to install, as all the tools required to compile from source are included. i haven't found it to be a very resource-heavy distro and would recommend it to anyone wishing to learn Linux. Slackware has Apache, but I'm not sure about the other two. Configuration is very simple, just edit a text file here and there, if you're not sure what you are doing, just do what I, and apparently thousands of other people do, that is to ask on linuxquestions.org. I love Slackware, Windows has been dumped and no longer contaminates my hard drive. Now to get it off the other three computers in my house.

I too am quite fond of slackware, it's fast. clean and everything is where the original software developers intended it to be. But the real distro that would get my vote would Rhino Desktop Linux, my very own distro that i'm working on, which just happens to be based on slackware 11, what a coincidence.

another vote for slackware i started off with fedora core 4 around a year ago, and it nearly put me off linux for life. i moved on to vector linux, a slackware based distro, and it was far better. i use fluxbox (and fluxboxdesk) window manager (i find KDE's options overwhelming to say the least) i learnt some commandline stuff, how to move around the filesystem, add users and groups, and how to mount drives, compile from source etc. then, when slackware 11 was released i thought it would be a good time to try it, and ive learnt some more, ive just build my own packages from source and im learning things all the time

Slackware is a good choice but I would check out Debian. Do a netinst and get the basic installation and then add everything else you need, without the bloat. It has a good package manager in apt-get/aptitude.

To a newbie I recommand an Ubuntu-version. I personally prefere the KDE-Desktop, so my advice is Kubuntu.

I started with mandriva, but moved after knowing basic linux principles to Gentoo. I am happy with it now (at the moment, I am in the process of changing from mandriva to gentoo in my laptop).

Solaris is on the poll, but not Gentoo? Where's the love? Debian's been omitted too? Lame.

I agree with rickh and pixellany. These which distro polls have been done to death. Can't the OP just google for the info?

First off, it's MEPIS... Secondly, with 3.4.3 you could use the Debian repos, and now with 6.0 you can use the Unbuntu repos. So what do you mean, "not many softwares"?

You may try slackware...it is a normal linux distribution, it is not very easy but not to hard...the installation it is very easy...u may wan't to read the slackware manual first...but if u will like it maybe u will find him very good for what u wan't to do.

Does anyone use Xandros? I have tried SUSE 9.3, 10.1 and 10.2, Redhat 9.0, FC6, Xandros 3.0, and Xandros 4.0. So far I like the layout of Xandros the best I find it easy to use very light weight and easy to show Windows users that this is another operating system out there that has the feel of Windows. This makes it very easy for a Windows user to move to Linux. I have installed this and all but the redhat on my Hp dv9005us laptop with about the same results in each execpt for SUSE 10.1 and Xandros 3.0. They had numerous problems with hardware issues. All of them have the wifi issue. Xandros 4.0 has a networking window to help install the driver(no typing). Of course the down side if you want to call it that is it only comes in 32 bit mode. I havn't tried ubuntu but I do have it. Maybe I will give it a try later to see what I think and how it acts on my HP.
