Wheres my desktop ? Mandrake 10.1

Hi all,

Finally managed to get mandrake 10.1 installed last night, after much head scratching.

Also why in the Docs\uk folder where I would of thought the documentation would be for the united kingdom, actually looks like its for the ukraine or somewhere ? anyway thats not the problem.

Basically whats happening is this.

The system boots up, everything seems ok, but its just a command prompt, now im not really bothered with this as I grew up with ms-dos 5, its just I'm clueless what to do next, I have no internet connection at home at the minute and no documentation (having to sneak this message in at work).

I can put in my username and password, gets accepted, then just sits there at the command prompt, I tried typing in 'kde' and the screen went blank for a few seconds then just dropped back to the prompt with a load of text on the screen (dont know what it said).

Anyone know where i'm going wrong ?

any help would be greatly appreciated, If this questions already been answered else where I apologise but I'm not really supposed to be doing this at work.

Thanks

yeah UK is Ukraine, you need look for GB as great britian. about fail log in, that happened to me before on mandrake 10.1 when I checked all boxes for every packaging on lists to install. One or more packaging seem causing that. So I had to reinstall and being very selective on what packaging to install. About boot to prompt, looks like you picked grub for bootloader. Try Lilo instead and lilo was at default configuration set for mandrake 10.1 when I installed it.

Yeah, I did install everything.

Dont remember anything about grub or lilo though, I'll have another look tonight.

Does sound like we've had the same problem though.

oh well, third time (installation) lucky.

Could really do with knowing what causes the problem, i'll try to have a look on the net later if I get chance.

Thanks

Hi,

If you can login as root, try to give the command:

init 5

if this works (and you get a graphical window), then you'll have to change the configuration file /etc/inittab.

Bye

Ya, trying init5 might be a good idea .. init5 should take you to the graphical login window .. I guess you are at level init3 ..

I don't know if startx works in Mandrake, it works like rocket in RedHat though .. Still, u can try startx, just type startx at prompt and keep your fingers crossed .. It shud take u to Graphical Interface ..

Good Luck ..

Ayrus ..........
