I put RedHat Linux WS Enterprise 3 on a HP machine that I have, that has 256 meg, but when it starts I get a message to the effect that "Linux WS Enterprise 3 running Taroon Update 4 (whatever that is) is running as an unsupported configuration - Taroon update 4 requires 256 meg, only 247 detected.
the memory used / reserved by the kernel is not shown to most nix utilities, so you will get reportings slightly lower than the actual memory amount your components claim to have. Also an integrated graphics adapter will take some of your RAM. Also you will loose some memry if you have the wrong memry support bulit in your kernel (a rare situation, you have to have over 1,5 gigs to get any use of passing the ~900meg limit with a highmem kernel)
