Hi
What modem you are using? Is it USB?
Can you post 'lsusb' and 'lsmod' output?
What dmesg says about your plugged device?
Do you have installed wvdial?

You really need to re-install wvdial (and wvstreams)
And then run 'sudo wvdialconf'
You might also want to check this

Yes, it is a script, udev script since Ubuntu let udev does all hardware config...
Ok then...what does dmesg tell you...
