what is a .bin file

I am trying to install Java. I downloaded the current rpm version, however, it has a .bin extension after the rpm extension. What is .bin and what do I do to get to the rpm extension. I'm grand from there.

thanks.

$ chmod a+x file.rpm.bin
$ ./file.rpm.bin
Then install the rpm the way you normally would.
Hope this helps
