What do the envelopes next to the posts mean?

I see the envelopes all the time but I checked the FAQ and I cannot find out where it says anything about what they mean. Can someone please enlighten me? I have not been able to figure out a pattern. Sorry for the strange question

I never thought about it before except for black dot means you posted.
Hmm...

Multiple letters is hot topic. -- lot's of replies
Single letter a question.

Closed letter. I thought it meant I read it.
But I guess not.... I'll get back to you

What is closed letter with lines over it? and what determines a "hot topic?"

It looks like open letter means the user is online.
Thus closed off-line.

I think the lines mean a guru posted.

Thanks for the question
