Variables in repo file

https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlab-r...install/centos describes adding a repository using:
Code:
[PUIAS_6_computational]
name=PUIAS computational Base $releasever - $basearch
mirrorlist=http://puias.math.ias.edu/data/puias/computational/$releasever/$basearch/mirrorlist
#baseurl=http://puias.math.ias.edu/data/puias/computational/$releasever/$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-puias
$releasever and $basearch seem to be some sort of variable. I tried echoing them, and they don't exist in the shell. How are they being used?

They are internal variables in yum. $releasever gets set from the version and release of the RPM that provides a specific *-release package in /etc (/etc/redhat-release in the Red Hat family). $basearch gets the result returned by "uname -m". Both can be overridden by flag arguments on the command line. e.g: "yum --releasever=6.4 update", etc.
