just wondering

h-
I realize it's approaching 3 a.m. where you are, and I'm a bit dense about all this. So if it seems it is just taking too long, feel free to call it a night and we can try again later. Just let me know when you've had enough ...

Most people have to go into the BIOS and change the boot priority order.
In otherwords, make the usb as the first boot option.

I didn't

My friend with the USB stick did the installation. If you need me to ask him some questions, I could ring him up and get back to you with the answer at your time of choice?

No, not terminal mode.

Maybe when you have time ask your friend that performed the installation; if he had to go into the BIOS to set the machine to boot to the usb device save the changes and than proceed to the install after exiting the BIOS.

If you could post the specifications of your machine that might help us to know if it's a uefi machine or not.
The make and model will help.

Oh

So, at start up you prevent the machine from booting by tapping the F4 key or something like that. Then it takes you to BIOS?

Thanks. I do need to head to my kip.

What I intended to do was get you to boot off your Mint Installation USB stick (but not reinstall Mint, just run Mint in "live" mode), run TimeShift, see if it recognises any snapshots as having been stored and, if so, restore one from before the problems began.

Is your friend able to come and help you with resolving the issue or is that impractical?

Generally you tap F2 to get into the BIOS. (it's often different for desktops) I'll look at the previous post to see if I can find the specs on your exact machine. Thanks.

For the installation it could be that your friend may have had to install Mint in 'UEFI mode' or in 'Legacy mode'.

Let us know if your friend is able to help or if he remembers which mode he installed Mint in.

IF you can boot into your Live usb of Mint and run Time Shift like hydrurga suggest's that will help you to restore the system.

Is there still or was there another operating system on your machine before installing Mint?

Sorry I can't help you with Time Shift......I'm not running Linux Mint.

Timeshift question

Zt,
I was finally able to boot from the USB stick, and find Timeshift. But this Timeshift does not have the restore points that the Timeshift on my hard drive should have. Right?

More..

The link gave me some good info about how to use Timeshift, but I could not find where it has you use it on a USB stick from another system and apply the functions to a non-functioning system (mine) to restore "snapshots" that are not on the USB stick system. Any ideas?

It's good that you know how to boot to the usb now.

Sorry I don't have any ideas. Best to wait for hydrurga to return to assist you with Timeshift. He knows more about it than I do:-
