Update Mgr and install of updates

Hi
At the present time I have 848.7MB worth of updates waiting to be installed.

I started to go through each one and most are security updates but some are greek to me. In other words I don't really know what the update is for.

I read through complications of other people having issues and error messages after allowing update's. Read the information at:

http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay...ysprune=&f=333

The truth is I didn't even know about Update Mgr until I read it in a Linux book-

Should I just stop being so worried about them and just click "install updates"?

I appreciate any help on this matter.

Sincerely,

They are updates to packages you already have installed on your computer, not new stuff. Since ubuntu is not a "rolling release" distribution, you only get minor security patches/bug fixes, not big version leaps that will change the functionality of your computer.

I generally advise to install all available updates. If you are curious for more details on an update, search for the package at http://packages.ubuntu.com and read the description and changelog.

Unfortunately from time to time, an update does unexpectedly cause problems. When this happens, you are probably not the only person it's happening to, and you can find help at: http://ubuntuforums.org

Think I will search a few of the packages.
Feel better about updates now....not a impending doom

Have a great weekend!

Many people add a boat load of third party repositories (like those PPA repos) to their sources. This greatly increases the possibility of updates causing problems. I stick to the standard Ubuntu repositories and I never have problems with updates.

I noticed some PPA's so I understand now.
Thank you
