update manager stalls causing unusable system

Hi,
Recently installed Xubuntu 8.04 onto an ASus desktop and have had a number of issues. The most serious being that using update manager to update files caused a problem resulting in not being able to boot Xubuntu. The update process seemed to be going OK until it got to a point where it was starting to update gstreamer files at which point it stalled and although i left it for over an hour, it did not get past this point. After shutting down and restarting I was able to get to the login screen but after logging in, it stalls before bringing up the main desktop. I tried using recovery mode which required a fix of aparently damaged packages and i also ran xfix but to no avail - i can still not boot into Xubuntu. I also noted that there is now two versions of Xubuntu and recovery mode in the grub menu at startup - none of which work. Any help to sort this so that i can get a working system again would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

there is, one of major reasons, why I dislike Ubuntu ...
You 'll never be sure that your system will boot or fully functionning after updates.

try to fetch the gstreamer package and run dpkg into your chrooted system.
For that, boot in recovery mode, enter your chrooted system (may be you'll need to do it by yourself).
