Unable to find Repository/Packages

I'm trying to install Linux on my desktop.

Irrespective of the type of distro, I get similar error messages- Please insert the media containing the packages/ Unable to find repository/DVD does not contain the image files...etc..

When I use the same dvd on another computer, the installation proceeds normally.

same answer with a bootable CD?

Are you saying that you can boot the CD/DVD and get an installation menu, but then it won't find the media to actually install?

What kind of computer?
DVD/CD drive IDE or SATA?

Yes, all these errors are with the bootable dvd.

Correct, I get the installation menu and thereafter it says it can't find the media to be installed.

AMD Athlon 64 X2
DVD Drive- IDE.

In case of Ubuntu, it says cannot find tty: Job Control turned off.
All other distros give the error I mentioned earlier.
