umm need some help, please

Ok i'll try to explain as best I can because I am an extreme newbie to linux, like me downloading it yesterday, Anyway the back story... I'm a mudder, however i usually just build, but everytime i would be massive areas for the mud the coder would, have a major fatal error and lose everything i did. This happened recently, which i said was the finally straw, (after like 9 years of building, losing over 400 areas.) Anyway the day before yesterday i went bought a book on C, which well lets say i've read the first 10 chapters, and I've learned some how to read code, but not really write it. Again anyway, Yesterday i downloaded mandrake 10, someone told me it suppose to be the easiest linux to learn, but they didn't know much about it. So i downloaded it (taking 12 hours) I burned it using nero in windows 98 se for cd boot, which was the wrong choice. I finally figured out after googling all over the place i didn't find anything, i searched neros index, your suspose to burn image. I was like ooooook..... (yeah i know i'm a complete moron) ok so i did the first disk just to see if it would work, it did i was like yay. But i wanted to do the other 2 disks, which i didn't burn yet so i stopped it in the middle to go back into windows, just to notice it screwed up my windows too, but i fixed windows, and burnt the other 2 cd, now the first install of the cd worked, on the second try i got an openoffice error i think it is, and it again screwed my up windows. So i burnt it again at 24 x, it all installed perfectly. now as it was installing i read that it didn't support certain types of adsl and nvidia cards, i was like oh great. But the video seems to be working fine... of course i have no idea how it should be, so i'm only assuming. Now my major problem is i can't seem to have it configure to the adsl modem, i think its the wrong drivers for it, i have a netgear fa-311 and it reads it as umm national semi dp38310 10/100 adapter, i have no clue if they consider that the same or what i dunno. i've done several searchs over google, ebay, and half.com and i can't find an answer on how to fix this problem. I even looked for a book on mandrake 10 and again i was not successful. Now keep in mind, i know excatly nothing about linux that i decided to try to learn 2 days ago. I fully intend to learn, however i see that i can not do this all myself without help, hench the reason i registered here. If someone could possibly point me in the right direction or per say a book i can go buy on mandrake 10, i would thank ye. Any and all help would be helpful of course, but if u could if you deicded to respond to help me, be sure to dumb down the directions... lol, thanks in advance.

I had to weed out that huge stream of nonsense to determine what your problem was.... I'm sorry to say but the people here don't really care about your life story.

You don't install drivers for your ADSL modem, you install drivers for your ethernet card. That is probably correct if it was autodetected. If your internet connection is working, then I don't see what the problem is.

Also, why were you searching on eBay and Half.com for Linux drivers and a solution to your problem?

Not that much, only 2706 characters in 538 words in 1 single paragraph. Really hard to read though.

Maybe he was looking for a book on Mandrake 10 on ebay and Half.com?

Not sure what the problem is, if your internet is working, there's no problem with the way the card was set up. A lot of hardware is made by other companies and re marked as something else but the will all have the same chipset.

I am supposing your modem is connected through the ethernet card and not USB right?

As for learning linux, many places sell cds that have training manuals for all different distrobutions including Mandrake 10. I have never used them, I just go to google.com or google.com/linux or search this site and i can usually find my answer.

Ok sorry, about the life story part, was trying to be somewhat comical. The problem is i can not connect to the adsl. I do not know if it's the network card or the settings. After i change the settings, and reboot, the ip address and mask is gone but the gateway is still there. I searched ebay and half.com for a book reguarding mandrake 10. My network works fine under windows but i can't get it to work under linux. I set it as adsl, ip adress, subnet mask, gateway, i even put in the 2 dns servers for my client. As i said previously my nic card reads as nation semi dp83810, and its a netgear fa-311, the only drivers i could find on it are for redhat 7 & 8. Will those work for mandrake 10? if so how would i change them?

OOPS! I didn't notice that you were using mandrake! Silly me! Just go ahead and try to install the redhat drivers using the latest rh driver that you can find. If you get any errors post here!

Ok i'm really confused here, i looked at the driver for the card and they are the same same as it says in the config menu, i would set the settings, ip, subnet, and it still doesn't connect. I'm really going bonkers here.. i click adsl, then i click the etho, then i click pppoe like it says, i put in the info, then i go to montior connection, it says connection complete, i try the browser and the monitor says not connected, i mean whats going on here?
